Relief from Teaching Stress
Summer holidays are almost here. A time when Teachers and Teaching Assistants can take a sigh of relief and ….breathe. At least for a while.
A number of people I know are teachers. They all say the same thing, that they love working with the children and love teaching. even with challenging students, and sometimes because of the most challenging ones. It’s the paperwork and many pressures that go with the job they find stressful.
They would enjoy the first week or so of the long Summer break and then the familiar feeling of tight chest and sinking stomach would reappear.
It all felt so stressful for some that they experienced long periods of depression, stress and anxiety with many trips to seek help from their doctor.
Some have since left their profession. They were in overwhelm and didn’t know what else they might do.
Lack of understanding and recognition from people outside of education, and sometimes within it, of the sheer amount of work they needed to do only served to add to a sense of pressure.
So what, you may ask, can you do to change how you feel?
What can you do to prevent overwhelm? What can you do to remain in the job you trained so hard for? What can you do to rekindle the joy of teaching?
Here’s a short video of one way that might bring an answer for yourself and your students too.
Emotional well-being for you and your students
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) in schools has grown in popularity since this moving video was filmed. It works so well for both staff and students. There’s even an accredited EFT in Education programme and Training.
HeartMath™ tools and technologies are another great way to help stay balanced, focussed and calm and are designed for use on the go. Perfect when in the classrooom, and anywhere!
Walking my talk
Both EFT and HeartMath™ are my own go to methods to better manage how I feel. Life does have a way of throwing up challenges and knowing what to do to help myself has been life-changing.
I’ve learned through personal experience in recovering from deep emotional and physical overwhelm, and in feedback from hundreds of clients, that regularly using simple techniques can help make a profound change in how you feel.
Preparation helps
Maybe it might help you too. Its much easier to remember to use ways to help stay calm and balanced when the method you use is already a lovely and welcome habit. Something to consider perhaps while preparing for the year ahead.
No matter what you choose to do, please know that you do have a choice and that seemingly small steps may be the start of a much more helpful way in living.
’til next time.
